WHERE WE STAND - Cymru goch

Wales is an exploited country, an even poorer appendage to one of the poor states of Europe. We arc ruled from outside, mainly for the benefit of outsiders. Once exploited to the full as an area rich in natural resources, and as a production area for heavy industry, Wales is now left scarred and impoverished as a result of their rundown. Our hard work and natural resources have been squandered to fill the pockets of a few 'parasites'. Our only "reward" is poverty, unemployment and the ever increasing toll of industrial diseases. Conditions in Wales are worse than those in England in every sphere. We have worse housing, lower wages, worse transport of all kinds, more illness, more pollution etc .. We believe that this state of affairs can only be rectified in a society where the working people of Wales collectively own and control the natural resources and wealth of Wales and plan its production and distribution for the good.of the community as a whole. This is what a free socialist Wales would do. Social progress and change will be achieved by working people taking control of their own lives. We therefore support a strong and democratic Trade Union movement both to safeguard our rights within the present system, and to create the necessary conditions for change.

The western capitalist states and the multinational corporations exploit underdeveloped countries and so widen the gap between rich and poor. We, therefore, support all workers overseas who are trying to overthrow this international economic system -imperialism- in the name of social progress and national liberation. We oppose anything that seeks to turn one worker against another such as racialism and all forms of inequality between the sexes. We work towards the creation of a Socialist Europe of countries co-operating freely, and we arc opposed to all oppressive military and economic groupings such as NATO, the Warsaw Pact and the EEC.

Cultural imperialism and economic imperialism go hand in hand. A society based on profit making has a vested interest in imposing uniformity of thought, language and culture on as many people as possible. We sec how the language spoken by the Welsh people for nine tenths of their history - Welsh - has suffered enormously at the hands of capitalist "free" enterprise and the British State. It can only be returned to its true position as the foremost language of Wales within a society based on the principles of socialism, using the resources of Wales to develop a full life for all. We believe that the struggle for a free Wales and a Socialist Wales to be one and the same. The nationalist and socialist movements in Wales have been separated too long. Once combined they will become an irresistible force working for the creation of a WELSH SOCIALIST REPUBLIC where the means of production are in the hands of the workers and power is firmly placed in the hands of the local communities.
